First month
I have always wanted to live abroad for a long period of time since I was a child. I had my first opportunity when I was only 15 years old but it didn't happen because the exchange program was so expensive, mostly for under age students. So I had to delay my dream. The second opportunity was an exchange program for young Jewish people who wanted to live in Israel during one year. That idea was so exciting, but I had just started my studies and if I were to have done this program I would have lost my place at the university. So I had to delay my plans one last time.
At the beginning of this year, I was without a job and a little bit unsatisfied with my studies, then I decided that it was the right moment to do an exchange program. I thought about going to USA, Ireland and Australia, but in the USA I could not work and I was afraid of going to Ireland because of the cold weather. So I decided to come to Australia because I had been here before to visit my sister when she used to live here. It was a good decision because she gave me a lot of tips and told her friends about me and they helped me.
I arrived here on 6th September and I was in doubt about where I should live - near Bondi Beach or near the city -. I hired a short term room in Millers Point and as soon as I arrived there I loved my housemates. They are from Brazil, Turkey, France and Germany. I realized that staying there would be better to practice my English, mostly because there are so many Brazilians at the share houses in Bondi. I am really grateful about my decision because in my house I can improve my English and learn about other cultures; furthermore, I have made good friends there.
I have only had two difficult days here. The first one was in my first week. I was jetlagged and I used to wake up during the night and I could not use my cell phone because I was in a share room. I felt alone and homesick and I was thinking about all the obstacles that I would confront here. But this feeling is normal and I got better really fast. My second difficult day was last weekend when I realized that I had no way to pay my rent since I still haven`t gotten a job. In the same day my cell phone broke and I got really desperate. It was the most difficult day here. But I kept myself calm and tried to find jobs that I didn`t need to use maps or a cell phone to arrive in the place. It was not easy but I learned that we have to be patient, especially about being an exchange student because we usually don`t have much money for unexpected things.
It was a long month, with highs and lows. But living in another country is the most beautiful experience that you can have, you will learn how to be self sufficient and at the same time how to appreciate your family, your friends and your country. You will learn that you need to be grateful about all the opportunities and even your mistakes, because they can teach you a lot of things. I am at the beginning of this journey but I am pretty sure that I have made the best decision ever.
